The capacitors used in the EasyCaps are specified by the manufacturer
as having perfectly acceptable characteristics after being operated at their rated
voltage in an atmosphere of 90 to 95% relative humidity at 40
°C for a period of 500 hours.
We have also conducted our own experiment on an assembled capacitor and circuit
board:
-
Measure initial resistance of sample using Megger on 500 V range.
-
Measure initial capacitance of sample.
-
Place sample in pan of water and bring to the boil.
-
Simmer for one hour.
-
Remove from heat and leave sample in water overnight.
-
Next morning, return to the boil.
-
Simmer for another hour.
-
Remove sample from water and allow to dry and cool naturally.
-
Measure final resistance of sample using Megger on 500 V range.
-
Measure final capacitance of sample.
-
Observe any other changes to the sample.
-
Place the sample in a magneto on the Brightspark rig and perform the
usual tests.
The initial and final Megger tests were both well in excess of 100 MΩ
and as close to infinity as you get.
The final capacitance was measured as being 1% higher than the initial
capacitance, using a meter that is good to ±1%, and so it cannot be
said that there was any discernible change.
The only other noticeable change was that the exposed tinning on the
circuit board of the sample had lost some of its shine.
On the test rig, the sample performed as new.
